Tanintharyi, the region through which the pipeline connecting the Yadana, Zawtika, and Yetagun gas projects to Thailand runs.
According to data from Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica, after the Myanmar military’s coup attempt, from February 2021 to April 2026, the Myanmar military junta carried out 253 airstrikes in the Tanintharyi Region, resulting in the deaths of 63 civilians and injuries to 138 others. In addition, within a four-month period from January to April 2026, there were up to 11 mass killing incidents, resulting in 76 deaths.
In Yebyu Township—through which the gas pipeline from offshore Tanintharyi to Thailand passes—there were 7 airstrikes and 1 mass killing incident, resulting in the deaths of at least 6 civilians.
According to the report “Urgent Action Required to Sever the Junta’s Financial Lifeline from Tanintharyi Offshore Gas Revenues” released by the Tanintharyi Coalition Resource Watch (TCRW), the conflict has displaced thousands of civilians and generated widespread human rights violations, including killings, arbitrary detention, and property destruction. Military forces have repeatedly used heavy artillery in civilian areas during clashes with local People’s Defence Forces. Civilian areas have also been affected by resistance groups’ attacks on military bases, checkpoints, and outposts. Fighting is ongoing along the pipeline corridor, largely linked to the sustained presence of naval forces providing security for gas infrastructure.
Reports document the use of airstrikes and heavy artillery by the Myanmar military, and in some instances, the use of civilians as human shields, including in situations where there was no active fighting. Oil and gas energy projects are linked to land confiscations, forced relocations, repression and surveillance of local people carried out by the military under the name of “security.” Along the oil and gas pipeline corridors, labor-rights violations and environmental damage continue to occur.
While the Myanmar military junta is committing human-rights violations and war crimes and breaching international law, Thai oil and gas companies are still signing new contracts for gas projects and entering into new gas-field deals.
